Mel Stern*

*Deceased.
Mel graduated from Boston English High School in 1952 and starred on its basketball team in that year. Toward the end of a championship game against Sommerville in the Boston Garden he made a series of long set shots to bring the team into serious contention, Boston English eventually lost. Merv remembers staying up late to hear the game and almost sleeping through the College Boards given the next morning at Boston Latin.

His grandfather had established a cooperage (building barrels out of wooden slates and putting metal hoops around them to make them strong and water proof). The family business was so well established it lasted for many years after its competitors had left the business.

Mel was the first of the Stags to be married. He married Cecily Pill. They had three childen Celia, Eric and Peter

Billy McIntosh*

*Deceased. Seeking Bio Details

Eddie Kezar*

*Deceased. Seeking additional bio details.

Nate Notes: Eddie's family had a lamp store on Blue Hill Avenue. I remember he also had a dog, a boxer, which he was crazy about. I last heard from him when I was just back in NYC, I guess it was 1962 or 1963. I got a call from him. He was living in New Jersy, was married and was very excited about his work doing technical writing for some science based company. He urged me to consider that as a career. I did not meet with him, I'm sorry to say, though we spoke about it. Perhaps my fondest memory of Eddie was the day he got up at a Stags meeting at the Hecht House and urged the club to buy some land, it could be anywhere he said but just owning it in common, he said, would keep us together as a group through the years. The idea was to eventually build a camp of something there, but even if we did nothing with it it would be a good investment and give us a geographic home through the years. He was right, of course, and I'm sorry it was voted down. I believe I voted for it. Natey

Eddie Green*

* Deceased

Eddie Green grew up on West Selden Street in Mattapan, Mass.
He Graduated Boston Latin Class of 1954 with Warren "Buzzie" Becker and earned a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern . He was President of ETA Associates of Newton, MA. He lived in Stoughton, Mass. Bobby Wynn lives down the street. His wife's name is Brenda, his daughter, Rachel DeAntonio.

Phil Schaffer worked with Eddie in 1961-62 at High Temperature Materials Corporation in Brighton, MA . Phil knew his wife Brenda.

Comments by Brenda June 3, 2009

After leaving Latin school, Ed spent five years at Northeastern University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering while simultaneously working on a cooperative basis at Raytheon's Missile Systems Division. He then worked for a number of years as an engineer in the aerospace industry and eventually phased into the area of sales and marketing of technical and scientific products.
For 36 years Ed owned and operated a New England based Independent Sales Agency specializing in Analytical Instrumentation for the industrial and scientific markets- ETA Associates Inc of Newton MA. In 1964 Ed and I were married and lived in California for several years before returning to our roots in New England. We lived in Newton MA for 30 years where we raised our only child, Rachel. Rachel (DeAntonio) and her husband Brian with our three grandchildren live near my current home in Apollo Beach, Florida. Our grandchildren are Stephen, who is 16, Zachary, who is 10.5 and Emily who is 8. Ed was a wonderful grandfather and very involved as I continue to be in the lives of the grandkids. Ed and I spent a significant time cruising our 36' sailboat around coastal New England with a special fondness for coastal Maine. In the winter months we split our free time and energy skiing and traveling to warm weather climates, such as Florida, the BVI & other world destinations. Through the years he remained a presence as “Uncle Ed” in the lives of Mel Stern’s fabulous kids Eric, Celia and Peter. After the sudden onset of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (5 months) and a valiant effort Ed passed away on October 27, 2007. He was buried at Sharon Memorial Park. Our beautiful daughter, Rachel, chose “Loving Man.......Our Hero.” for his memorial plaque.

Paul "Brownie" Brown*

*Deceased.
Merv Post:Paul Brown ( Brownie) and I were good friends. He went to Franklin Thompson Jr High School and graduated in the class of 1950. His father had a gas station downtown and Paul used to work there washing cars and doing other helpful chores on Saturdays . He had a brother Obie. He used to get to ride his dad's red Jeep and often we would go to Nantasket Beach in it . It was an open, really bumpy ride. Brownie graduated Boston English in the class of 1953 (with the group) and later continued his studies and graduating from Northeastern. He and I were lovers of music and we would spend lots of time hanging out listening to all sorts of records. Brownie was the " Ladies Man "and a good dancer of the group and one of the first of us to get laid as a teenager making us all very envious. He married Beverly Landsman who I used to tutor in Mathematics at UMASS. They had a few boys and lived, I think, in Westport, CN. My parents were very close friends of his parents ( Jean & Harry). I last saw them in Florida in 1987 when visiting my dad after my mother's death. His dad at the time was suffering from Parkinsons Disease.

On May 14, 2010 Natey Freedman noted a posting on our STAG blog from Corey Brown, the son of Obie Brown, Paul`s younger brother ( 6 years). Cprey expressed interest in learning more about the Dorchester STAGS, but did not leave any forwarding email address. Natey quickly came up with several Corey Browns in the Boston area (the beauty of the computer) with addresses and phone numbers. Merv followed up and left messages on the answering machines. Lo & behold, the mysterious Corey called Merv at 9PM that night.

Paul, son of Jean and Harry Brown grew up on Fuller St.. As you know Harry owned a Mobil Gas Station on Albany St. downtown and several parking lots. Brownie used to help his dad out on weekends washing cars and pumping gas.

He loved music, was a neat dancer and had raging hormones. He graduated from Frank V Thompson Jr high school and then went on and graduated from Boston English in 1953. He was a ladies man of the first degree and was an outgoing groovin guy.. He graduated from Northeastern and went on to Graduate School at Syracuse University. He was an accountant .

He married Beverly Landsman in 1958. Beverly grew up in Winthrop and attended UMASS Amherst for a few years and was in the sorority STD. Beverly transferred to and graduated from B.U. Paul took a job with the Ford Company and they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. They had two sons:Jeffrey and Eric. Later they moved back east to Connecticut and lived in Old Greenwhich and later settled in Westport. We think he worked for NBC for a short time then Corey thought he worked for the Playtex Company.

Paul died on January 14, 1976 at the early age of 40 from a heart attack. When Beverly remarried she wed Paul`s first cousin, David Young (His mother`s sister`s son ). Beverly married David (now 61) who was about 12 years younger and the couple moved out to California. Beverly was a teacher in the LA area. She is about 73 years old now.

Jeffrey is now about 47, is married to Susan and they have a son, Branden.

Eric, Paul`s youngest son, died in 2000 at the age of 34.

Phil Schaffer

I graduated from Boston English High (1952), went to MIT; earned a B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgy/Materials Science; primarily worked in engineering/research/management activities; long time in semiconductor materials/defense electronics.

Spent six months on active duty (1957) in the Army and several years in the MA National Guard.
In retrospect, if I were not an engineer, I would have been a good coach/manager in baseball, football or basketball: would have preferred to have played seriously, but I knew early on that I was not good enough to play at that level.

I have lived in Lexington (MA) for 42-plus years, married for 45 years, daughter (42), son (38), four grandkids (ages one through nine): took early retirement at 55, worked as a consultant for 3-4 years. Presently involved in many town, Temple, academic activities, attempting to remain both physically and mentally challenged.

Natey Freedman

Natey was Stags 25. The 25 was for 25 Crowell St where he lived. He graduated Boston English High School in 1952. Then he went to Boston University Junior College. After 6 months he transferred into the College of General Education of B.U. for one semester and then went into the Army Volunteer Draft. He served two years in the Army and was stationed in Korea (peacetime). When he got out of the Army, he returned to B.U. earning an Associate in Arts Degree from CGE and two years later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Relations and Communications from BU's SPRC on Commonwealth Ave. At that time he was head of the news department of the B.U. college radio station WBUR. He auditioned for WCOP in Boston and became a street reporter. Later he joined WBZ as a street reporter. He met his wife, Yael, a New Yorker (whose parents met and married in Israel) at B.U.. Nate and "Ellie" married in 1961 and have been married 47 years.
While at WBZ in Boston, he wanted to cover the Eichmann trial in Israel and subsequently
got WINS in New York City to be his base station and to feed his reports from Israel to the seven other US radio stations Natey had brought together in a one-time network. He went to Israel and lived there 3 and a half years; first covering the Eichman Trial, and then spending 8 months on a Kibbutz. Following that he worked as English Articles Editor for the Israel Ministry of Tourism in Jerusalem and then for the Israel Technion in Haifa.
They have 3 children; a daughter and 2 sons. His two sons were born in Israel- Noam and Ilan. His daughter Talia was born in the US and lives in Albuquerque. Ilan is employed by the US Department of Homeland Security (US Customs) in New Jersey. They have one step grandchild. Nate and Ellie returned to the US in 1964 and has lived in N.Y. City ever since. In New York he worked for the United Press Radio as a news editor, an editor at ABC Radio Network and as a street reporter for WABC-TV. In later years he held jobs as Public Relations Director for the Israeli Tourist Dept ( 7 yrs); the Zionist Organization of America (4 Yrs); and the American Jewish Distribution Committee (7 Yrs).
At age 50 he retired from Public Relations and opened up a PIP Quick Printing Franchise in Manhattan and ultimately owned 2 stores, one in SOHO and one in Union Square. As small copiers began to erode the business of small printing shops, he came up with another venture, The New York Firefighter's Friend. Also located in SOHO the store was a favorite of friends of the New York Fire Department (FDNY) and became a city "institution" regularly visited by firefighters from around the country. Articles regarding the store appeared in the New York Times on four occasions as well as in other local and occasionally national publications.
Natey retired from business 6 months after the events of 9/11 at age 68. His son Noam has the business now.
Since retirement Natey has taken up painting.
